Abstract

A concentrated germicidal composition comprises an aqueous solution under acidic conditions of one or more germicidal phenols which are normally sparingly soluble in water, this solution containing more than 1 per cent e.g. from 1 1/2 to 5 per cent by weight of the phenol or phenols maintained in solution by the presence of a quantity, e.g. from 10 to 25 per cent by weight, of an anionic or non-ionic dispersing agent, e.g. a salt of a secondary long-chain alkyl hydrogen sulphate, sufficient to have this effect under the conditions present, and the acidic conditions being provided by lactic acid and phosphoric acid used together preferably in the relative proportions of from 1 to 10 parts by weight of lactic acid to 1 part by weight of phosphoric acid. Ethyl alcohol, methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol may be added to increase the dispersing power of the dispersing agent. Specified germicidal phenols are p - chloro - m - cresol, p - chloro - m - xylenol, o - benzyl - p - chlorophenol, the benzyl cresols, amyl - m - cresol, 2:4 dichloro - 3:5 - dimethylphenol, 2:21 - dihydroxy - 3:5:31:51 - tetrachlorodiphenylmethane and 2:21 - dihydroxy - 3:5:6 31:51:61 -hexachlorodiphenylmethane Specification 743,984 is referred to.
