Abstract
760,942. Heat insulation. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 20, 1953 [Oct 23, 1952], No. 28949/53. Class 64(2) A panel, e.g. for constructing or insulating a wall of a refrigerator, has walls 1, 2 supported by a fibrous filling 7 and sealed at their edges, ribs 14 being arranged between the filling and one of the walls with gaps at intervals along their length to provide passages 15, Fig. 3, 17, Fig. 1, facilitating the evacuation of gases. The ribs are formed on a separate member 11 and the sub-lengths of the ribs extend in herring- bone fashion on either side of each elongated land 13 formed by the gaps. The sub-lengths of the ribs 14 in section, Fig. 1, approach the perpendicular to the general plane of the member 11 and the passages 17 are formed between them but the lands 13 in section and the sub-lengths in side view, Fig. 3, are inclined to that general plane. There may be several members 11 each in the form of a metal plaster-lath with a channel portion 18 at one edge. The filling 7 may be of glass fibre arranged as in Specification 715,174 and precompressed as in Specification 715,175 and spaced from at least one edge of the panel to form a passage 9 to which the exhaust conduit 10 is connected. The wall 2 may be used as an exposed surface of a refrigerator and may be of thin stainless steel so that when the panel is evacuated, atmospheric pressure causes the wall to adapt itself to the shape of the member 11. The resulting pattern, (Fig. 2, not shown), masks any unwanted marks on the wall. A mesh screen may be inserted between the filling 7 and the member 11, (Fig. 4, not shown).
