Abstract

759,832. Steam superheaters, &c. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., MELHUISH, H. and RUDORFF, D. W. Aug. 29, 1952 [May 30, 1951], No. 12716/51. Class 123(3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A header for a locomotive steam superheater or like heat-exchanger is fabricated from steel plate and the ends 5 of the superheater &c. elements 6 are jointed to the wall 1 of the header by tubular nipples 2. The nipples are secured to the header wall 1 at apertures therein by annular welds 31 or 51, and they are also welded at 53 to an anchorage plate, or plates, 34 spaced exteriorly of and parallel to said wall and having holes through which the nipples extend. The plate 34 is formed to provide slots to accommodate the shanks of the clamping bolts 38 of the elements and seats for the heads 41 thereof. As shown the header comprises flat side plates 7, 8, top plate 12, 13 and longitudinal partition plate 11, welded to one another and to the plates 1, 34 ; also spaced interdigitated superheated and saturated steam pockets each constituted by a horizontal or inclined upper plate 44 extending between the side plate 7 or 2, and the partition 11 and side plate 22, 23 extending the full width of the header between the plate 7, 8.
