Class 122(5) [Also in Group XXXIV] Leakage of oil along a reciprocable shaft 3 from a bearing to a space or chamber 4 is prevented by providing the bearing member 1 with a bearing portion 1<SP>1</SP> and a non- bearing portion forming with the shaft an annular passage 2 extending to the chamber 4 and provided with two axially-spaced circumferential grooves 5, 6, the one nearer the bearing portion being connected by a duct 5' to an oil reservoir and serving to drain leakage oil in the passage and the other being connected by a duct 6<SP>1</SP> to an exhaust pump to remove oil vapour from the passage. Oil is supplied to the bearing portion through a passage 7. An axial groove sloping radially outwards from the groove 6 to the groove 5 may be provided in the wall of the passage 2 to assist oil drainage to the groove 5. The grooves 5 and 6 may each be duplicated and connected by branch conduits to the ducts 5<SP>1</SP> and 6<SP>1</SP> respectively. Specification 554,279 is referred to.
