Abstract
757,548. Forming fibre mats. BRENNER, I. G. March 22, 1954, No. 8346/54. Class 120 (1). [Also in Group VIII] Fibres, such as glass fibres, to be formed into a continuous or a shaped preform, are introduced at 16, Fig. 1, into a chamber 10 in which they are scattered by a distributor 39 rotated at high speed about a vertical axis, and are deposited on a travelling foraminous belt or on a rotated perforated forming member 21, deposition being assisted by currents of air drawn through slots 22, 23, 24 and 25 and then through the perforated form member, e.g. by a fan 36. The fibres may consist of short lengths cut from strands by a cutter 18. The forming member 21 is supported on a disc 20 mounted for rotation within the table 15. Sprays of plastic material or other treating fluids may be introduced at 64 and 65. There is also described a modification (not shown) comprising two rotatable discs 20, each adapted to carry a preform member 21, mounted in a larger table 15 which is capable of sliding horizontally so that one or other preform can be situated inside the machine at a time and the remaining preform be situated outside the machine.
