Abstract

Wood is preserved by impregnation with solutions, dispersions or emulsions of insecticides or fungicides or both containing a water-soluble polyalkylene glycol of molecular weight at least 200 or a lower (C1-C4) alkyl ether thereof. Specified insecticides and fungicides include sodium, potassium and ammonium fluorides, copper sulphate, zinc chloride, mercury chloride, zinc silico-fluoride, arsenates, chromates, bichromates, derivatives of benzoic acid, halogenated naphthalene, naphthenates, dinitrophenol, dinitrocresol, trinitrophenol, parachlorophenol, sodium and potassium pentachlorophenolate and other aromatic hydroxy compounds. The solution &c. may be applied by immersion or mist spraying. Compatible bonding agents such as horn glue, casein glue, melamine and nitrocellulose plastics and resins such as tall oil resin, colophony and shellac; and surface active materials both ionic (salts of higher fatty acids with organic or inorganic bases, higher alkylarylsulphonates, higher fatty alcohol sulphonates, higher alkyl sulphates, long-chain aliphatic amino and ammonium compounds) and non-ionic (polyglycol ethers of aliphatic alcohols, such as lauryl and cetyl alcohol, polyglycol ethers of aromatic alcohols such as phenol, butylphenol and octylphenol and polyglycol esters such as alkylene oxide-tall oil fatty acid, oleic acid or lauric acid condensates) may also be added. Specified solvents include water, methanol, ethanol, butanol, methylethyl and methyl-isobutyl ketones, ethylene glycol monomethyl and monoethyl ethers, benzene, xylene, ethylene dichloride, carbon tetrachloride and trichlorethylene. In an example wooden rafters are sprayed with an aqueous solution of polyethylene glycol (M.W.4000), sodium pentachlorophenolate and octylphenolpolyglycol ether.
