Abstract
Aerial disinfectant compositions comprise as active ingredients at least one dihydroxy compound selected from propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol and resorcinols of the formula <FORM:0933684/VI/1> wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl together with at least one a -hydroxycarboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0933684/VI/2> wherein R1 singly represents methyl, R2 singly represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl or wherein R1 and R2 together represent -(CH2)n-, where n is 4 or 5. The compositions may be dispersed into the atmosphere to be disinfected by self-propelled pressurized aerosols, mechanical dispersion of solutions by pump or squeeze bottle, evaporation from the surface of impregnated material such as paper or by suitable heat vaporization. The preferred aerosol propellants are low-boiling fluorochloroalkanes; "Calorgas" (Registered Trade Mark) may also be used. The aerosol compositions may also contain inert solvents, e.g. alcohols, ketones, ethers and halogenated hydrocarbons, deodorants such as aliphatic aldehydes and aliphatic esters of a -methylacrylic and a -ethylacrylic acids, and propylene glycol and its condensation polymers if not already present as active ingredients, and for relief of the common cold may contain perfumes such as menthol, camphor, oil of eucalyptus and oil of wintergreen, and also sympathomimetic amines. The mechanical dispersion compositions may contain inert solvents, e.g. water or lower alkanols, deodorants, aromatic compounds, sympathomimetic amines and perfumes. Materials such as paper may be impregnated with ethereal solutions of the active ingredients. As active ingredients, resorcinols specified are resorcinol itself and hexyl-resorcinol, and specified a -hydroxycarboxylic acids are lactic acid, a -hydroxyisobutyric acid, a -hydroxy-a -methylbutyric acid and cyclohexanol-1-carboxylic acid.
