Abstract
755,249. Centrifugal pumps. SYKES, Ltd., H., and PAISH, H. P. S. Jan. 28, 1955 [Feb. 22, 1954], No. 5182/54. Class 110(1) In a centrifugal pump of the-kind which is primed by a vacuum pump connected to the suction side of the centrifugal pump by way of a valve which is closed by a float when the water level in a float chamber connected to the suction pipe of the centrifugal pump rises on completion of priming, the back of the casing of the centrifugal pump is connected to the float chamber so that the vacuum pump can exhaust air from the casing. The suction pipe 1 of the centrifugal pump carries a float chamber 3 which communicates with the suction pipe and contains a float 4. A vacuum pump (not shown) connected to a pipe 7 creates a vacuum in a housing 6 and, through holes 8, in the chamber 3, causing the water level in the chamber 3 and in the centrifugal pump casing 2 to rise until a valve 5 carried by the float 4 closes the lower end of the pipe 7. A pipe 9 running from the upper part of the chamber 3 to a point 10 near the hub of the impeller 11 allows air leaking through a gland 12 to be removed by the vacuum pump.
