Abstract

754,515. Cold-cathode tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Sept. 23, 1954 [Sept. 24, 1953], No. 27546/54. Class 39 (1). In an ionization manometer tube having a cold cathode in the form of a metal cylinder, an anode disposed on the axis of said cylinder, and a magnetic circuit the poles of which are coaxial with the cathode and are arranged one at each end of the cathode, the poles of the magnetic circuit are in the form of cylindrical rings housed in the interior of the vacuum space. In the construction shown, the tube comprises an iron vessel having a cylindrical, wall 1 and end covers 2 and 3, each with an axial bore. Permanent magnets 4 and 5, each also having an axial bore, are provided in association with the end covers 2 and 3 which together with the wall 1 complete the magnetic circuit. The cylindrical cathode 6 is mounted between the poles of the magnets 4 and 5 and sleeve members 13 and 14 attached to the end faces 7 and 8 of the cathode extend into the bores in the magnets to assist in confining the discharge to the interior of the cathode. The cathode is insulated from, and centred with respect to, the permanent magnets by mica discs 9 and 10 and is held in position by a spring member 27. A rod anode 11 secured in a cap 21 mounted on a ceramic insulator 22 is partially covered with glass or other insulating material 12 so that the effective anode surface does not extend beyond the cathode 6 and sleeves 13 and 14. To facilitate the evacuation of the interior of the cathode 6 the sleeves 13 and 14 are hollow, holes 15 are provided in the cylindrical wall of the cathode and apertures 16 are provided in the cover part 3. The wall 1 is secured in vacuum-tight fashion to a member 17 which is mounted by means of a rubber packing 18 and a screw cap 19 on a connecting member 20 leading to the receptacle, the pressure in which is to be measured. A conductor 24 leading to the cathode 6 is led through the cover 2 in vacuum-tight fashion at 23 and the tube operating voltage is fed in by a cable 25 led into a closure cap 26 as shown.
