Abstract
833,386. Discharge tubes. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A. G. Sept. 12, 1957 [Sept. 29, 1956], No. 28778/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXXVII] A switch having contacts 7a, 7b disposed in an evacuated container 1 is provided with an ionisation pump for removing residual gases from the housing. The pump comprises a ring anode 11 and a cylindrical cathode 12 housed within a hollow electrode 6 which carries the contact 7b. A permanent magnet 14 with a soft iron yoke 15 surrounds the electrode 6 and establishes a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the ring anode 11. A high direct voltage e.g. of several thousand volts, is applied between the electrode 6 and a terminal 13 of the anode 11. The resulting ionised gas molecules impinge on the cathode to which they are bound, the cathode being of titanium, tantalum or other sorptive material. The contact 7a is carried by a movable electrode 2 which is sealed to the housing by a diaphragm 3. Screens 16 prevent the formation of conducting bridges on insulating parts of the housing.
