A container 1 comprises a base member having a lid 5 hinged thereto along one side, the base member being provided at the side remote from the hinge with guide means disposed substantially parallel to the hinge axis and housing a plunger slidable along the guide means against the action of a spring 12 under the influence of a finger piece 17 located outside the guide means and a catch element 7 adapted to pass freely through an aperture 15 in the plunger or lid to engage under the edge thereof to be retained thereby under the action of the spring, but to be released when the plunger is moved by the finger-piece, the catch element and aperture being provided one on the lid and one on the container. As shown, the container is the powder container of a powder compact, the catch element 7 being on the lid 5 and the aperture in the plunger. The plunger is in the form of a rectangular tubular element made from sheet metal and the guide consists of a flange 4 having a depending rim (not shown) projecting from a wall 1a of the container. The flange 4 has a slot 6 through which the catch element 7 can pass. The catch element is retained by the engagement of a nose 7b of the catch element by an edge 9a of the aperture 15 which is in the top wall of the plunger. The finger-piece 17 projects through a slot in the casing 2 which contains the powder container 1 and it is connected to the plunger by means of a pin 16 which engages in a housing formed in the plunger. The catch element is formed with a cam face 7a so that the catch can engage automatically.
