Abstract

751,382. Magnetic couplings and brakes. BAERMANN, M. Feb. 12, 1954 [Feb. 13, 1953], No. 4270/54.. Class 35. A magnetic fluid clutch or brake contains ferro-magnetic power which, when magnetized, forms a thin layer on the surfaces of plates of the clutch or brake and the device is rendered operative on inoperative by sliding motion imported to a permanent magnet system. The clutch or brake is held in the disengaged position by springs 87, 91 acting on pins 86 secured to the annular magnet 84 and when the magnet moves to the left as shown in Fig. 2 the members 78, 71 on the two shafts become coated with a thin layer of the powder and the oil flows from one side of plate 78 to the other. The magnet is magnetized radially and when in the inoperative position the flux path is closed through pole-piece member 83 carried in the non-magnetic member 82 which, with housing member 71 provides guiding surfaces for the axially movable magnet. The ring 81 which the magnet abuts in Fig. 2 is of non- magnetic material. Specification 649,553, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
