Abstract
675,352. Clutches. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 23, 1950 [Dec: 2, 1949], No. 28676/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] An electromagnetic clutch or coupling comprises relatively rotatable members 2 and 20 of which the member 2 comprises a permanent magnet, and the member 20 an electromagnet excited through slip rings 41. The, permanent magnet member 2 has spaced polar areas divided, by a non-magnetic spacer element 15, these areas defining a single air gap between them and a pair of axially spaced air gaps with the casing of the electromagnet. When the electromagnet is not energised the flux passes radially across the axially spaced air gaps, so that a quantity' of magnetic fluid 30, which may comprise magnetic iron particles suspended in oil, is solidified and acts to transmit torque from one member to the other. When the electromagnet is energised the flux path is diverted from its radial path to an axial path across the single air gap between the permanent magnet pole members. The magnetic fluid is thus concentrated in the circumferential grooves 16 and -24 in the permanent and electromagnet casings and no longer acts as a braking medium. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 649,553.
