Abstract

789,938. Electromagnetic clutches. BAERMANN, M. July 18, 1956 [July 18, 1955], No. 22292/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A magnetically operated friction clutch comprises two relatively rotatable coaxial members 2 and 6, a clutch disc 8 arranged between the members, and axially movable relative thereto, permanent magnet ring-shaped magnetic poles 10 and 12 provided on the disc, and an electromagnet 13 associated with one of the members 2 or 6, and disposed opposite the ring-shaped magnetic poles 10 and 12, the arrangement being such that by changing the polarity of the electromagnet, the disc 8 can be moved axially either in the direction of member 2 or member 6 for engaging or disengaging either of these members. The magnetic attraction between the disc 8 and armature 3 may be varied by the use of a layer 19 of non-magnetic material and the clutch may have a housing filled with magnetic fluid or with iron powder in suspension.
