Abstract

The invention comprises 6a -hydroxypregnane-3,20-dione, and the preparation of progesterone by oxidizing 3a ,6a -dihydroxypregnane-20-one with cyclohexanone in the presence of Raney nickel to produce 6a -hydroxypregnane-3,20-dione which is esterified at the 6-position with p-toluenesulphonic acid and the ester obtained is reacted with an organic base, e.g. pyridine, alkyl derivatives thereof containing methyl and/or ethyl groups and N-dialkylanilines, at temperatures below 200 DEG C. Examples describe the production of progesterone.
