Abstract
The invention comprises the compound of the formula <FORM:1099061/C2/1> This compound, methyl isogeroniol and/or C1- 6 alkanoic esters of methyl isogeroniol are produced by reacting myrcene sulphone with formaldehyde or a polymer of formaldehyde, if desired in the presence of a C1- 6 alkanoic acid or anhydride thereof, at a temperature below 90 DEG C. and then pyrolyzing the product formed. When the acid or its anhydride is present the dioxane is not formed but an ester of methyl isogeroniol is formed and may, if desired, be saponified to give methyl isogeroniol. Any odour of sulphur may be removed from the methyl isogeroniol product by treatment with Raney nickel.
