The invention relates to systems of the kind in which the speed of a D.C. motor is controlled in accordance with the difference between its terminal voltage and a reference voltage, by varying the supply to the motor armature (e.g. from a Ward-Leonard generator or gridcontrolled rectifier); the field of the motor being supplied from a substantially constant source. According to the invention a further control signal is provided to compensate for changes in the motor field current due to variations of the supply or variations in resistance of the field winding. As described with reference to a Ward- Leonard system, Fig. 4 (not shown), the compensating signal is obtained from the voltage drop across a resistor in series with the motor, field. Alternatively the motor field exciter may be automatically controlled in accordance with the field voltage and current, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), and the speed control reference voltage taken from the field-exciter.
