Abstract
739,341. Bifocal lenses. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Jan. 21, 1954 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 1821/54. Class 56. In the manufacture of a bifocal lens a preformed minor segment 14 is deposited, polished face upward, in a depression 10 in the concave face of a mould member 8. At another station the segment is heated and at another station molten glass G, of a different refractive index, is flowed thereover from a furnace outlet 11 until sheared at 12. The mould then, after passing partial cooling stations, passes to a station where the coacting mould ring 29 and plunger 37 form the major segment from the deposited glass G to which the minor segment becomes welded.
