428,269. Glass manufacture. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Bausch & Lomb Optical Co.; 635, St. Paul Street, Rochester, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 25, 1934, No. 27472. [Class 56] A method of making composite discs of glass for multifocal lenses consists in assembling pieces of glass with their edges in contact, and then heating the assembly to such a temperature that the glasses fuse together. The method is intended particularly for the formation of a composite glass button which is afterwards ground and polished and is fused into a depression in a glass blank to form a multifocal spectacle lens, as described in Specification 428,270. For this purpose, two or more pieces of glass, 29, 30 are fitted snugly into a recess formed in a block 20 of refractory material. The assembled pieces are then covered with a refractory slab 27, inverted, and placed in a furnace. When the glass softens, the pieces fuse together and the block 20 prevents the glass from flowing and distorting.
