Abstract

822,985. Multi-focal lenses. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. June 18, 1957 [June 22, 1956], No. 19230/57. Class 56. Multi-focal lenses are made by positioning major blanks 10 having countersinks 12 therein in overlapping relationship in holders 32 on a conveyer 16 traversing a tunnel 46 surrounded by heaters 56, 60, 64 of different intensities. The blanks pass under an opening 72 in the tunnel roof through which a continuous ribbon 14 of glass descends from a heated tank 68 to mould and fuse itself into the countersinks as a continuous strip. The blanks and attached strip continue to move through the annealing furnace 54 whereafter the ribbon is broken between each blank so that the part fused in the countersink forms the blank of the minor segment.
