Abstract

A method of producing spheroidal graphite in alloyed or unalloyed cast iron by the addition of magnesium to the molten metal comprises adding, despite the presence of small amounts of titanium, some, but not more than half, of the magnesium in the form of magnesium nitride. The magnesium may be added as a partly nitrided alloy, or as partly nitrided elementary metal, or as a mixture of magnesium or magnesium alloy and magnesium nitride, the latter preferably in the powdered form. Specifications 630,070 and 716,843 are referred to.
