Abstract
<PICT:0737337/IV (c)/1> Pressure is applied equally to both ends of an upper press roll 5 for pasteboard manufacture, or for squeezing textiles in washing or colouring machines &c. by a hand wheel 19 turhing a spindle 18 passing through a nut 17 pivoted in the machine frame 1, to move an arm 16 secured to a torsion rod 12 which extends half-way along the inside of a hollow shaft 8 to the middle of which the rod 12 is secured, an arm 7 being keyed near each end of the shaft 8; the ends of the spindle 6 of the roll 5 being carried at the other ends of the arms 7. Reverse rotation of the hand wheel 19 raises the upper press roll 5. In a modification, the upper roll can be raised without affecting the setting of the pressure-applying mechanism, which may be indicated by a scale and pointer.
