A straight-bar machine has two draw mechanisms 21, 22, one of which reciprocates a chain mechanism 57 for driving the yarn carriers and the other of which drives the slurcock. The yarn carriers comprise a main yarn carrier 23 and a plating yarn carrier 72, the two carriers being driven from the chain mechanism such that the plating carrier always lags behind the main carrier. For this purpose catches 67, 68 drive the main and plating carrier bars 69, 70 respectively, the catch 67 being rigidly connected to the main carrier bar, but the catch 68 extending between studs 76, 77 on the plating carrier bar so that a lost motion connection is provided. At the end of the traverse of the chain mechanism, the drive therefrom to the carrier bars ceases but to complete the yarn feeding of the plating carriers additional movement is imparted to the plating carrier bar by friction boxes 84, 85 mounted on a bar 82 which is driven from the slurcock operating bar. These friction boxes follow closely behind a slide 88 connected to the plating carrier bar and take up and complete the motion of this bar until it is finally arrested by stops 92, 93 being engaged by studs 74 on the carrier bar. The draw mechanisms comprise a block 37 sliding on a bar 36 and driving the slurcock, and a member 137 slidably mounted on block 37 and driving the chain mechanism. The block 37 and member 137 are driven by separate cam and lever mechanisms.
