Abstract
736,370. Supply systems for space-discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CATES, J. April 14, 1954 [April 14, 1953], No. 10187/53. Class 38 (4). A pair of cold starting lowpressure electric discharge lamps 1, 2 are connected in series across the secondary winding 8 of a voltage step-up transformer 9 and one only, 2, of the lamps is shunted by the normally closed contacts 10, 11 of a thermal starting switch 12 of the resistance-heated bimetal type the heater resistance 13 of which is connected in series with the lamps and the secondary winding whereby to open the contacts in response to the passage of lamp-discharge current. The voltage of the secondary winding is sufficient to initiate a discharge in lamp 1 and this discharge current actuates the switch to start lamp 2. The transformer may be either auto- or double-wound, and may be of the stray field type to provide all or part of the lamp ballast. The circuit shown includes a ballast capacitor 18 of such value that the overall ballast is capacitive.
