Abstract
664,043. Control systems for space discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd., and FREESTONE, R. Jan. 28, 1949, No. 2487/49. Class 38 (iv). A starting arrangement for one or a plurality of series-connected fluorescent lamps L1, L2 having filamentary electrodes comprises a nominally closed contact ts of a thermal switch in the circuit connecting the two electrodes in series which contact is opened by a heating winding h connected in the lamp supply circuit to initiate the usual starting voltage from the inductance CH, the series circuit being maintained open by the contact b1 of an electromagnet relay B responsive to the voltage across the lamp and which operates when the lamp discharge starts. The heater h may be shortcircuited when the electromagnetic relay operates. In the case of series-connected lamps each is controlled by further contacts b2 on the electromagnetic relay. The coil of the electromagnetic relay may be under the control of the contact a1 of a further relay A responsive in the lamp supply circuit to prevent operation of the electromagnet relay B in the event of a lamp being absent, or the contacts of the thermal relay being open. The coil of relay A may be shunted across a part of the ballast resistance R.
