Abstract
736,209. Cold-cathode tubes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 13, 1953 [Aug. 9, 1952], No. 20090/52. Class 39 (1). In a current regulator tube comprising an axial rod electrode 2 and a cylindrical electrode 4 supported between dimples 5 in the wall of the envelope 1 and having a gas filling near or above atmospheric pressure, the gas filling has. a radioactive characteristic to provide substantially constant ionization of the gas between the electrodes. Carbon 14 combined as carbon dioxide is the preferred radioactive isotope since it has a long half life, decays to a stable isotope of nitrogen and is a-soft beta emitter. Tritium alone or combined as a hydrocarbon is also a suitable material. The tube is provided with an external guard ring 6.
