Abstract
1,137,039. Ionization chambers. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 23 March, 1967 [28 March, 1966], No. 13780/67. Heading H1D. A through-flow ionization chamber for measuring the ion content of a gas has a high tension electrode 22 and a measuring electrode 12 at a potential substantially equal to that of the envelope 6 which is earthed, the measuring electrode 12 having orifices 28 to admit gas to the useful volume of the chamber, which orifices are sufficiently small to substantially confine the electric field to said useful volume with the object of lowering and stabilizing the parasitic collection rate. The electrodes 12 and 22 are supported from a flange 8 of the envelope 6 by insulators 10 and 20. Insulating ring 10 is electrostatically shielded by a flange 29 of electrode 12 and an extension 30 of flange 8. In an arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), for monitoring the radioactive gas content of an atmosphere, the envelope 6 communicates at one end with a chamber containing a dust filter (32) and a deionization filter, and at the other end with a chamber containing a fan (34) and an amplifier (35). Alternative embodiments (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown) comprise a cylindrical arrangement in which the high tension electrode surrounds the measuring electrode which surrounds a gas inlet tube, and an arrangement with flat plate electrodes.
