Abstract

735,611. Rotary pumps and engines. COCKBURN, D. H. Oct. 4, 1954 [Oct. 6, 1953], No. 27424/53. Class 110 (2). A reversible pump or engine has sliding- rocking vanes 31, which engage with barrelshaped slots 28, in a rotor 24, and vane extentions 30 provided with cut-away portions 42 to facilitate the passage of fluid into and from the working chamber 15. For a pump, inlet and outlet ports 36, 40 are less than the width of the working chamber, peripheral portions 38, 39 of the latter providing bearing surfaces for the arcuate portions of the vanes. A groove 47 allows escape of fluid trapped in front of a vane, after the leading edge of the latter has cut off the outlet port at a point 44. A similar groove 50 is used when the pump is reversed. The rotor is secured to the shaft 18 by splines 27, in grooves 26, which provide a limited amount of freedom for the rotor to rock about an axis 1-1, should there be any irregularity in the faces 16, 17 of the end walls 10, 13. The splines are also tapered as shown, Fig. 2. Each vane may be pressed outwards by a spring-pressed plunger. Fig. 5 (not shown). The inner end of a vane may be beaded, Fig. 6 (not shown). The capacity of the pump, or engine, may be varied by varying the eccentricity of the rotor 24 in its casing.
