Abstract

735,416. Milling. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Oct. 16, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 28597/53. Class 83 (3). A milling-cutter comprises cutter blades 34 mounted in radial slots in a body 21 and an axially movable rack 30 in a circular bore in the body for adjusting the blades angularly. The cutter body 21 is secured by bolts 26 and keys 24 to the spindle 13 of a vertical-spindle milling machine. A draw-bolt 20 extends through the spindle and carries the circular rack 30 engaging teeth on the blades 34. Axial movement of the rod 20 rocks the blades about the centre 49 of guide surfaces 35, 36, 39 in the body 21 and on a keeper 38 secured to the body by plugs 41, 42. The diameter is thus always constant at the point 49. Back-lash in the rack gearing is taken up by a tapered plug 51 which can be rotated to expand the split body 30. The rod 20 rotates in a block 53 which can move only axially and carries a screw 56 engaging a nut 57. The nut is rotated through gearing 60, 611 and differential gearing in a housing 65. Handles 75, 80 give a fast or slow adjustment while the spindle is rotating or stationary, the angle of the blades being indicated by a scale 88.
