734,965. Fluid-actuated valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 7, 1953 [April 16, 1952], No. 9315/ 53. Class 135. A relief valve, e.g. acting as a by-pass valve for a liquid filter, comprises a valve stem 30 carrying a head 32 pressed by a spring 36 on to a seat 26, the head being so shaped relative to the valve through passage by an adjacent washer 34 that liquid flow, when the valve is open, produces an unbalanced lateral force on the head to move it laterally against an adjacent fixed valve part, e.g. the casing, whereby valve chattering is damped. An eccentric washer 34 having one side flush with and the opposite side overhanging the head is placed on the stem between the spring and the head, thus making the head asymmetrical so that the flowing fluid produces the lateral force on the head. The overhanging portion may be formed as a bevelled or per. pendicular thickened lip.
