Abstract

Pyrogenic polysaccharides derived from gramnegative bacteria are acylated, e.g. with an organic acid anhydride. The dried bacteria containing such polysaccharides and preextracted with a solvent for lipoids may replace the polysaccharides themselves. The products are stated to be useful as stimulating agents for the pituitary-adreno-cortical system with only very negligible p side-effects. To minimise side-effects, acylation should continue for at least five hours. Examples describe the treatment of a pyrogenic coli polysaccharide with acetic or propionic anhydride in pyridine and water or in pyridine and formamide, and also the extraction of coli bacteria with chloroform and ethanol, acylation with acetic anhydride in pyridine and water, and further extraction with chloroform and ethanol. Polysaccharides from other bacteria than coli bacteria are referred to.
