Abstract
Spheroidal graphite cast iron is made by adding to a molten bath of grey cast iron, containing not more than 0.05 per cent of sulphur, and at least 3 per cent of silicon, calcium in an amount of at least 0.5 per cent by weight of the bath, the temperature of the bath not exceeding 1500 DEG C. and further silicon being added with the calcium, if desired and when additional silicon is necessary to give the bath a content of at least 3 per cent. The bath may be desulphurized in any known manner, e.g. by the addition of granular calcium carbide in a stream of nitrogen through a consumable black iron pipe, before the addition of calcium. It is stated that no advantage is obtained by increasing the silicon to more than 5.5 per cent or the added calcium to more than 1.5 per cent. The calcium may be added as calcium silicide particularly if the bath requires an addition of silicon. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 700,626.
