Abstract

A process for the production of a grey cast iron containing Ca comprises adding to a molten iron, which on casting gives a grey cast-iron hypereutectic in relation to carbon, a Ca-providing substance such as its carbide, nitride, cyanamide or hydride or its alloys, e.g. with Si or Ni, the addition being made under conditions which substantially prevent formation of CaO, the temperature of the molten iron being maintained below 1650 DEG C. The Ca-providing substance may be carried in a stream of inert gas through a tube dipping below the surface of the molten iron. After the addition of Ca a graphitizing inoculant such as ferrosilicon or graphite may be added. Specification 622,419 is referred to.
