Abstract

A method of making cast iron comprises using a silicon-containing inoculant, e.g. ferrosilicon wherein strontium is also added to the cast iron at the inoculant stage. The method may be applied to both flake and nodular graphite irons. The strontium may be added to the iron melt simultaneously with the inoculant, in the form of strontium metal or strontium silicide, or it may be alloyed to the inoculant prior to inoculation. If alloyed to ferro-silicon the strontium may be in a proportion of 1-4% by weight, the ferro-silicon used being of low aluminium and calcium content, or preferably substantially free from calcium. If added direct to the melt in the presence of a silicon inoculant, strontium may be added in quantities up to 40% of the weight of the inoculant, or strontium silicide may be added in quantities up to 67% of the weight of the inoculant. Strontium or strontium silicide may also be added to the melt independent of any regular inoculant.
