In a rotary tilting furnace, the rotary drum 1 is mounted on a frame comprising segments 4 provided with teeth engaging other teeth 6 on horizontal tracks 5, said frame being provided with projections 7, 8 and 9, over which passes a chain 10 secured to the projections 8 and engaging hoisting gear 11. The radius of curvature of the segments 4 and the position of the tilting axis relative to the axis of the furnace are so chosen that it is not necessary to move the ladle 12 into which the furnace discharges. Axial displacement of the drum 1 is prevented by rollers 3 and the part 5a of the track on which the segments rest is rotatable about a vertical axis. In a modified tilting arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston rod of a vertically mounted pivoted hydraulic cylinder engages, by means of a roller, one end or the other of an arcuate slot formed in the support frame, thus tilting the furnace in either direction. The roller is positioned in the slot by the pistons of horizontally mounted hydraulic cylinders.
