Abstract

1340638 Slag skimming apparatus LOUIS A GRANT Inc 19 Jan 1972 [19 Jan 1971 11 Jan 1972] 2630/72 Heading F4B A slag skimming apparatus comprises an extensible boom movably mounted on the support, a skimmer paddle on the end of the boom and drive means for extending the boom. The apparatus comprises a telescopic boom 12, Fig. 1 mounted to pivot in a vertical plane about an axis 15 mounted on a turntable 10. The inclination of the boom 12 is controlled by two pairs of hydraulic cylinders 22, one pair being arranged on either side of the boom and connected to the outer section of the boom to move it to its desired position and hold it there. A skimming paddle13 is pivoted to the end of the inner section 18 of the boom, which runs on rollers 20 within the outer section 17. The inner section carries racks 29 engaging driven pinions mounted on the outer section and driven by individual motors 31. The paddle 13 is moved by a rod 36 connected to a piston and cylinder 35 at the opposite end of the inner section 18, supply pipes to the cylinder being wound on to an automatic reel 38. A stop on the boom engages a piston 44 to prevent over extension of the inner boom, cylinder 43 cushioning the stop. In another embodiment, Figs. 2A and 8, the inner boom 17<SP>1</SP> runs on flanged rollers 20<SP>1</SP> adjustably mounted in bracket 26<SP>1</SP> to project into the outer boom. One roller at the front and one at the back can be adjusted in height by means of screws 29<SP>1</SP>, these rollers, and the intermediate rollers being secured at the desired level by screws 28<SP>1</SP> engaging the brackets 26<SP>1</SP>. Roller chains 33<SP>1</SP> are secured to the upper face of the inner boom and co-operate with pinions 37 mounted on the outer boom section. Rollers 22<SP>1</SP> at the front of the outer boom prevent the inner boom 17<SP>1</SP> from rising from the rollers 20<SP>1</SP>, and stops cushioned by cylinders 87, 88 limit the travel of the boom section 17<SP>1</SP>. The skimming paddle is formed in two parts, the blade part 47 having channels engaging bars 57 on the pivot part. The automatic reel for the hoses for the pneumatic cylinder operating the paddle through links 68, 69 is mounted on the outer boom section, and the hoses enter the inner beam section through its side wall. By extending and retracting the boom and pivoting the skimmer paddle slag can be gathered and flicked from a ladle or furnace into a container, and the skimmer can be retracted and rotated on the turntable to allow easy access to the slag container, ladle or furnace.
