Abstract

A high temperature electric resistance heating element is formed of a metallic composition consisting of Mo 50-84 per cent, Si 15-48 per cent and Al 1-35 per cent; it may also contain 20-30 per cent of one or more of zirconia, thoria, alumina and beryllia. The element may be formed by mixing molybdenum disilicide in powdered form with molybdenum aluminide, making the mixed powders into a paste with a plasticizer, shaping and sintering. Alternatively, a skeleton body of Mo, Mo-Si or Mo-Al may be infiltrated with Al-Si. Before use, the articles are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere, forming a coating of aluminium oxide with lower oxides of molybdenum.
