730,269. Cemented pile fabrics. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP KONINKLIJKE VEREENIGDE TAPIJTFABRIEKEN. Nov. 13, 1953 [Nov. 13, 1952], No. 31487/53. Class 142(4). A pile fabric is made by pleating a fibrous web, or a number of parallel threads, by means of an inserting member that pushes a strip member, fed from a magazine, against the web or threads and forces it between lamellae, the strips being retained in the pleats until after the pleats have been fixed to a base. In one embodiment, a web 4 is fed over a wheel 3 and pleated between lamellae 1 on a drum 2 by strips 10 fed from a magazine 9 and pushed against the web by a cam operated member 7. A second cam operated member 11 presses against the strip in the last formed pleat while the next following pleat is being formed. The pleats are cemented in a continuous coating or base layer. In a second embodiment, the first cam operated member pushes the web between the lamellae to form a pleat and the second cam operated member feeds the strip into the pleat. A base may be fixed to one or both sides of the pleated material and the pleats are subsequently cut. By movement of the magazine 9, successive strips project from opposite ends of the pleated material and give more space between the strips at each end, and facilitate their removal.
