In an extensometer for measuring the strain produced in a specimen by a test load and consisting of two yokes 4 carried on L-shaped pieces 1, 2, adapted for relative movement parallel to their longer limbs, the specimen 5 is forced into penetrating contact with points 8, Fig. 2 (one in each yoke), by spring-loaded balls 9, the extension of the specimen being indicated by a dial gauge 18 attached at 20 to the member 1.
