In the arrangement of the main invention for defrosting refrigerant evaporators, a check valve 29 is provided in the trap 20 between the header 13 and the horizontal evaporator 17 to prevent surges of refrigerant up pipe 19 during defrosting or when evaporator 17 is heavily loaded.
