Abstract
723,390. Controlling aircraft. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 25, 1953, [Sept. 26, 1952], No. 24249/52. Class 4. A high lift device for supersonic aircraft having strongly swept back wings comprises a down-' wardly deflectable hinged flap located at the inboard portion only of the leading edge of each wing. A flap 4 is pivoted at 5 to the root leading edge of each wing 1, to which it is connected also by a jack 8. The wing may have leading edge sweep-back angle of, 60 degrees, and the hinge line 5 may be swept back a 45 degrees with the flap chord at the root in the order of one-fourth of the wing chord. When the jack is contracted the flap is deflected downwards by about 25 degrees, and it may be constructed with a permanent downward camber as shown by dotted lines in the drawing. The leading edge flap may be associated with a trailing edge flap that extends from the root end of the wing to the inboard end of an aileron.
