Abstract
5 - Cyanomethyl - and 5 - (cyanoethyl) - pyromucic acid alkyl esters are hydrogenated to give the corresponding 5-aminoalkyl derivatives by treating with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. the noble metals of Group VIII of the periodic table. Alcohols may be used as solvents and especially the alcohol furnishing the pyromucic ester. The products are precipitated by forming the oxalic acid salts. In an example, 5-cyanomethylpyromucic acid ethyl ester is treated with hydrogen using palladium-barium sulphate as catalyst.
