551,990. Esters of pantothenic acid. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO., AKT.-GES., F. Sept. 5, 1941, No. 11362. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Esters of pantothenic acid are obtained by causing catalytically active hydrogen to act on #-nitro-propionic acid esters in the presence of α-hydroxy-##-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone. In an example α-hydroxY-##-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone and #-nitro-propionic acid ethyl ester are treated in methanol solution with hydrogen in the presence of a platinum or palladium catalyst. The pantothenic acid ethyl ester is obtained as a clear syrup.
