Abstract
Alcohols containing a tertiary hydroxyl group obtained from the follicle hormones according to 30297/34 in so far as they are of aromatic or unsaturated character are hydrogenated to the saturation of the double bonds. The hydrogenation may be carried out catalytically, or by means of atomic hydrogen, or hydrogen in the nacent state obtained by the action of sodium metal on an alcoholic solution of the starting material. In an example 1,5 grams of the tertiary alcohol of the formula C19H26O2 prepared by the action of methyl magnesium iodide on crystalline follicle hormone are dissolved in 150 ccs. of glacial acetic acid and 200 mg. of platinum oxide added according to the methof of Adams-Schringer. The mixture is shaken for 18 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere, and the catalyst removed. A product is obtained of the formula C19H32O2 which gives a physiological activity of 4 mg. per capon unit.ALSO:Alcohols containing a tertiary hydroxyl group obtained from the follicle hormones according to Specification 30297/34 in so far as they are of aromatic or unsaturated character are hydrogenated to the saturation of the double bonds. The hydrogenation may be carried out catalytically, or by means of atomic hydrogen, or hydrogen in the nascent state obtained by the action of sodium metal on an alcoholic solution of the starting material. In an example 1.5 grams of the tertiary alcohol of the formula C19H20O2 prepared by the action of methyl magnesium iodide on crystalline follicle hormone are dissolved in 150 ccs. of glacial acetic acid and 200 mg. of platinum oxide added according to the method of Adams-Schringer. The mixture is shaken for 18 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere, and the catalyst removed. A product is obtained of the formula C19H22O2 which gives a physiological activity of 4 mg. per capon unit.
