Abstract

722,725. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. PERKINS, Ltd., F., and CONDIE, J. R. June 1, 1953 [March 3, 1952], No. 5518/52. Class 135. Means for regulating the speed of fuel-injection compression-ignition engines of the kind in which the fuel pump rack 6 is actuated by a spring-loaded diaphragm 5 subject to pressure in the induction manifold 1 communicated through a pipe 4, comprises means responsive to engine speed for varying the pressure in the induction manifold. As shown, a diaphragm 9 connected by an adjustable link 12 to the engine butterfly valve 2 and biased by a spring 14 is connected by a pipe 11 to the pipe 4 so that a variation of engine speed, giving rise to a change of pressure in the induction manifold, causes the butterfly valve to be adjusted so as to cause the diaphragm 5 to vary the fuel delivery. In a modification, the butterfly valve is adjusted by a centrifugal governor instead of by the diaphragm 9. The relative positions of the butterfly valve and the diaphragm 9 or the output member of the centrifugal governor may be varied by a hand control operating either on the linkage between those parts or on an eccentric associated with the butterfly spindle. It is stated that electric or hydraulic transmission may be provided between the butterfly valve and the speed responsive means and that the latter may, alternatively, be electric or hydraulic.
