Hot material from a rotary kiln, is cooled in a rotary cooling drum first by a cross-current of cold non- preheated air and then by a counter-current of cooling air. The drum shown for cooling cement clinker comprises crosscurrent cooling zone a and countercurrent cooling zone b separated by partition c, the zone a being equipped with elements d providing a number of compartments each of which is either provided with apertures e or is made of gas permeable material. The cooling air may be blown into these compartments either as shown or through apertures on the periphery of the drum. When blown as shown, a ring f, fixed to the drum and sealing the open ends of the compartments, is provided with the necessary air inlet apertures. This ring is covered by a slide g formed with air passages so arranged that the slide may be slid into positions such that only compartments covered with clinker are exposed to the cooling air from the blower. The slide may be replaced by any other equivalent closure member such as a hood. The heated air from zone a is used entirely or in part as combustion air in the kiln. The clinker passes from a through apertures h into chamber i from whence it is distributed to the cooling cells in zone b, cooling in this zone being effected by air drawn into a suction box k from the atmosphere through the cooling cells and an inner tube. The cooled clinker leaves the drum at m, any dust entrained by the counter-current cooling air being passed through the valve n to join the outgoing clinker.
