Abstract

721,785. Winding packages of textile fibres. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J. Aug. 24, 1953 [Aug. 11, 1952], No. 20211/52. Class 120 (2). The roll-like package of twisted textile product formed in a roll winding machine, which is mounted for movement into and out of frictional driving contact with a driving roller, is lowered into contact with the driving roller by positively-acting power-operated control means. In the machine shown, to start a wind, a lever 32 is depressed to turn a latch 28 against spring-pressure 30 to release an arm 24. This frees the package-supporting arm 12, which, through an arm 20 and pin 22, rests upon the arm 24, for moving downwardly. An eccentrically-mounted gear 34, carried by the arm 24, comes into mesh with a driving pinion 38 and is rotated thereby, positively moving the arm 24 downwardly and thus lowering the core 16 or roll 18 into contact with the driving roller 10. The core 16 or roll 18 is then driven by the roller 10 but the arm 24 descends until its end 26 comes against a stop 42 on a weighted and pivoted lever 52. The gear 34 is then driven out of mesh with the pinion 38. Should the yarn 44 break or become exhausted a detector lever 46 falls to turn a disc 54 and rotate the lever 52. The stop 42 is then released from the end of the arm 24 and the eccentric gear 34 is again brought into driving engagement with the pinion 38 to lift the lever 24 and so remove the roll 18 from the roller 10. As the arm 24 rises it re-sets the latch 28, and as the end 26 of the arm 24 engages the notch 58 of the latch, the gear 34 rotates out of engagement with the pinion 38. To ensure that the gear 34 and pinion 38 come clearly out of engagement at the end of a working cycle, co-operating spring-influenced V-shaped grooves and ribs are formed respectively in the gear 34 and on a bushing carried by the arm 24.
