Abstract
538,841. Winding thread. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1940, No. 2960. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1939. [Class 120 (ii)] In a thread-winding machine in which the bobbin is carried in a pivoted bracket and driven by contact with a rotating drum, a latch carried by the bracket or fixed with reference to the pivot thereof is adapted to engage a catch fixed with reference to the pivot or carried by the bracket when the bracket is swung away from the drum so as to hold the bobbin clear of the drum and a masking member, disposed alongside the catch with a limited motion with respect thereto, has two oppositely inclined edges one of which is engaged by the latch to carry the masking member to one end of its motion as the bracket is swung away from the drum and lifting the latch when the bracket is swung beyond the point of engagement of the latch and catch, the latch then engaging the other inclined edge and, on the swinging of the bracket towards the drum, carrying the masking member to the other end of its limited motion, riding up the edge clear of the catch, and down the first edge so as to leave the bracket free to approach the friction drum. As shown the latch 46 is pivoted in a slot in a boss 17 of the bracket 19, 21 carrying the bobbin 29 and the catch is in the form of a collar 34 fixed to the shaft 14 on which the bracket is pivoted, the masking member 36 being rotatably mounted on a hub 55 of the collar and having a slot 43 engaging a pin 41 projecting from the collar ; a pair of latches and members 36 are arranged at each side of the catch collar to serve two bobbin brackets. When a bobbin is to be removed from contact with the driving drum, the bracket is lifted until the end 47 of the latch lever is forced by the spring 48 into a catch notch 37 in the collar, the bobbin then being held away from the drum and the member 36 being carried around by the pressure of the lever against the inclined edge 57 of the masking member. The bracket may be lifted until the lever rides over the edge 57 and into a catch notch 38 in the collar, the bracket being then held vertically above the shaft 14 and by disengaging the arm 19 from the end 27 of the bobbin spindle 25, the bobbin may be removed from its bracket. When an empty bobbin has been secured on the bobbin spindle and the bracket lowered, the end of the latch lever 47 moves up the edge of the notch 38 and, pressing against the inclined edge 58 of the member 36, carries the member so that the portion 52 between the two inclined edges masks the notch 37 and allows the latch lever to slide past it and carry the member 36 back to its original position.
