Abstract

719,380. Generating, combustion products under pressure. - POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Nov. 2, 1951 [Nov. 17, 1950], No. 28229/50. Class 51 (1) In a cyclone or vortex type of combustion chamber, i.e. one consisting of a volute chamber with an axially-extending outlet in the centre of one of its side walls and in which fuel is burnt while travelling in air which enters the chamber tangentially or nearly so, means are provided for setting up a flow of cooling air over the combustion chamber, and for discharging the cooling air with the combustion products. The apparatus comprises a flame chamber disposed within an outer casing to which cooling air is supplied, the flame chamber being supported within the outer casing by means which permit relative expansion. The outer casing comprises a cylindrical portion 1 and two domed end covers 2, the cooling air being led thereto through the axial inlet 2a and the combustion products discharging therefrom through the axial outlet 2b. The flame chamber is a hollow-walled structure, the outer shell comprising a more or less cylindrical portion 4g and end plates 4a, and the inner shell a cylindrical portion 5b and end plates 5a. Cooling air channels 4d are more or less radially disposed on the end plates 4a and are interconnected by longitudinal channels 4e on the cylindrical portion 4g. The flame chamber is supported within the outer casing by means of the sections 15 and 17 secured to the channels 4e which engage the sections 16 and 18 secured to the outer casing, the pairs 15, 16 being axially disposed and the pairs 17, 18 circumferentially disposed. Cooling air from the space between the outer casing and the flame chamber enters through the slits 4k to the space between the inner and outer shells of the flame chamber and then passes through slits into the channels 4d, 4e. Cooling air entering the channels 4d on the air inlet side of the flame chamber enters an annular passage between the tubes 12, 13 and discharges as an inner annular core with the combustion products discharging through the outlet 2b. Cooling air entering the channels 4d on the discharge side of the flame chamber enters an annular passage between the tubes 10, 11 and discharges as an annular stream around the combustion products discharging through the outlet 2b. The inner shell of the flame chamber is formed of sector-shaped elements connected by tongue and groove joints to permit expansion, and cooling fins 5c and supporting studs 8 are secured thereto. Cooling air may pass straight through :the tube 12 to form an inner core to the combustion products. Combustion air and fuel are supplied to the flame chamber through flame tubes 22 disposed in three tangential inlets 1a, there being three fuel nozzles and three flame . tubes in each tangential inlet. The flame tubes; enter the flame chamber tangentially through the radial walls 4c between the volute-shaped portions of the shell 4g.
