Abstract
719,088 Belt gearing. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1951 [June 4, 1951], No. 28892/51. Class 80 (1) [Also in Groups VIII, XVI and XXX] A roller supporting member for aligning a moving object, e.g. a conveyer belt, or pulley belt or metal strip, with respect to a path normal to the axis of rotation of the member comprises coaxial convolutions at least on each side of the transverse centre of the member to provide flexible support for the object, the outside diameter of the convolutions on each side of the transverse centre increasing in size from the outer ends towards the centre and gearing mounted shaft means supporting the outer ends of the member. In one embodiment two spring sections 8, 10, Fig. 1, are secured at points 12, 14 to a shaft 2 which may be driven or idle. When a strip S moves thereover the sections move towards the shaft at the point of contact. In another embodiment, for a belt B. Fig. 5, a single spring 16 is employed. In a modification for a troughed conveyer belt a cylindrical spring C, Fig. 3, is ground on its outer surface and is mounted on steel shafts 2a. The adjacent ends of spring sections may be welded or joined by a connecting piece.
